Hajichi ハジチ

Hajichi is a custom once practiced in the Ryukyu Kingdom, where women would tattoo the back of their hands in deep blue patterns and symbols that often represented milestones in their lives and a spiritual connection to the ancestors. Since it was banned in 1899, hajichi has been disappearing over time.

A movement of modern hajichi practitioners (Hajichiaa) around the world have come together to bring this custom back. I am proud to be part of this revival and have started offering hajichi to my clients. As I learn more on this journey, I’ve started compiling information I find on a Google Doc that can be explored below.
